The Plaça de Les Glories Catalanes in Barcelona has been under construction for 80 years. Today, it’s overloaded with layers of temporary urban furniture and has become an infernal crossing point for all mobility options.
To improve mobility and make these interstadial spaces pleasant to be in while respecting urban criteria, we developed a modular set of roadblocks to create street furniture.
The system includes a streetlight, bins, benches, leaners, shaders, and provides guidance to users thanks to an intuitive floor pattern. CURB offers maximum flexibility to urban developers who can rearrange or replace modules to suit their needs and therefore facilitate mobility and wellbeing in urban spaces under construction.
The project kicked off with a deep analysis of Plaça De Les Glories Catalanes. Mapping traffic, user types, when it becomes busy and how the space reacts. We then posed questions, drew our conclusions and brought to life a system that would solve the many impracticalities of spaces that stay under construction for and extend period of time..
